5 year old water treatment plant not yet opened in Mudichur

CHENNAI: Despite being one of the fastest developing areas in the suburbs, residents of Mudichur often face shortage of drinking water

Situated near Tambaram, Mudichur comes under the St Thomas Mount Panchayat union. During the monsoon seasons, the area gets flooded every year, leading to water shortage in summers.

After many requests from the public, the state government constructed a water treatment plant at Mudichur at an estimated cost of Rs 8 lakh. The work was completed in 2019. However, the problem still persists as the plant has not been commissioned due to various unexplained reasons.

“We have requested the Department of Rural Development to make the unit operational but we have not received any response from them yet,” complained Helen, a resident of Mudichur. “Since the unit has not been used for more than four years, all the equipment has become useless. Our area floods every year, making outsiders think that we do not have drinking water problems, but in reality, there is a severe shortage every summer.”

Official sources said that the “unit was constructed during the AIADMK period without a proper work order, so there were few problems in starting the operations of the unit. We are exploring all possibilities to make it operational soon.”
