Keaton Winn Undergoes Season-Ending Right Elbow Surgery – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants, plagued by a series of injuries to their starting rotation all season, suffered another twist Friday when the team announced that right-handed pitcher Keaton Winn will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week.

Winn has been out since early July due to an inflammation in his elbow. He began throwing some light pitching, but was ruled out earlier this week after experiencing some additional soreness in his pitching elbow.

“It’s been frustrating for him,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said Friday at Oracle Park before San Francisco’s game against the Colorado Rockies. “He’s never really felt great through this whole process. We’ve shut him down, got him back to pitching, so obviously he’s got to get that done.”

Winn (3-8, 7.16 ERA) has had mixed results in his second season with the Giants.

The 27-year-old lost his first three starts but bounced back to win his next three, before slipping into another slump, losing five of his last six.

Winn will undergo ulnar nerve transposition surgery in Los Angeles on Monday.

The Giants also announced medical updates on several other players:

– Right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb, who has not pitched this season due to left hip surgery, is expected to pitch for Single-A San Jose as a rehabbing pitcher on Friday night.

“If everything goes well today, he’ll probably pitch in Game 2 against Oakland (on Wednesday),” Melvin said.

-Center fielder Jung Hoo Lee (left shoulder surgery) is still recovering and all indications are that he will be recovered in time for next season.

“(He’s) about to start catching and stuff,” Melvin said. “I think he’s coming along nicely. It’s tough when we’re on the road, you can’t catch him while he’s rehabbing and stuff. But everything I’ve heard is he’ll be in time for a full spring training next year.”

-Right-hander Jordan Hicks will likely make his final start of the 2024 season in Sunday’s series finale against Colorado. With several of San Francisco’s injured starters beginning to return to the roster, Hicks, who has spent most of his career as a reliever, will likely return to the bullpen.

– Thairo Estrada (left wrist sprain) was placed on 10-day IL. Estrada aggravated his sore wrist last week.

– Right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck threw a bullpen session on Friday and will begin live batting practice next week.

– First baseman/designated hitter Wilmer Flores (right knee tendonitis) will be re-examined by team doctors this weekend.
