3 Army soldiers injured in gunfight on LoC in Kupwara district of J&K

Srinagar, July 27 Three Army soldiers were injured in a heavy gunfight on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Saturday.

According to official sources, three soldiers were injured in gunfights near Kumkarib post on the LoC in Trehgam area of Kupwara district on Saturday.

“Some terrorist movement was noticed by the soldiers on the LoC following which exchange of fire ensued between the terrorists and the soldiers. The operation is still underway in the area and further details are awaited,” sources said.

Terrorists have made fresh infiltration attempts in J&K in recent days with the help of the Pakistani army.

On July 18, two terrorists were killed when the army foiled an infiltration attempt across the LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara district.

On July 24, a terrorist and a soldier were killed in Battal sector of Krishna Ghati area in Poonch district when another infiltration attempt was foiled by the troops on the LoC.

It is not yet clear whether Saturday’s shootings were the result of an infiltration attempt or another attempt by terrorists operating from across the LoC.

These infiltration attempts come against the backdrop of serious ambushes carried out by the militants in the hilly districts of Jammu division over the past two months.

As reports of a group of 40-50 foreign mercenaries operating in the hilly and mountainous areas of Jammu division gain credence, the enemies of peace and tranquility in J&K, sitting across the border in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, are trying to up the ante by sending more ultras into the UT.

In response to this revised strategy of tackling terrorism, the Indian Army has deployed over 4,000 of its highly qualified para commandos and those trained in mountain combat in Poonch, Doda, Rajouri, Kathua, Reasi, Ramban and Udhampur districts of Jammu division to eradicate terrorism from these otherwise peaceful areas.
