Austria vs France LIVE: Latest score and updates for Euro 2024 as Kylian Mbappe scores own goal for Max Wober

Kylian Mbappé calls on young people to vote and warns of ‘extremes’ in the run-up to the French elections

France starts their Euro 2024 campaign in Group D with a thrilling match against Austria. Les Bleus are strongly tipped as one of the favorites to win this tournament, having finished runners-up at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a very similar squad at their disposal.

Manager Didier Deschamps takes charge of his sixth major tournament with France and should he lead France to victory in Germany, he will become only the second person to win a European Championship as a player and as a manager – a feat he has already achieved with the World Cup after France’s victory in 2018.

However, France face an interesting team for their opening match in Ralf Rangnick’s Austria. After an impressive qualifying campaign in which they finished second behind Belgium, the Austrians prefer a match with high urgency and pace in transition.

GOAL! Austria 0-1 France (Wober OG’38)

38 min: A few minutes after Austria misses its golden opportunity, France takes the lead!

Austria is clumsy not to play freely at the back and Kylian Mbappé makes the difference! He delivers a cross after beating his man down the right and Maximilian Wöber is the unlucky man to head the ball into the far corner of his own net!

Happy for France, desperate for Austria! The favorites lead…

Austria 0-0 France

36 min: Great chance for Austria squandered!

Captain Marcel Sabitzer cushions the ball perfectly from a cross wide, playing Christoph Baumgartner through on goal, but he can’t lift the ball up and past Mike Maignan – who makes an impressive save!

And Baumgartner looks up at the sky – what a moment that was!

Austria 0-0 France

34 mins: Ousmane Dembele is just too quick for Austrian left-back Phillipp Mwene on the byline – and the defender is the second man in the book!

Griezmann again over the free kick… but again he can’t make it count and Austria clear at the first post!

Austria 0-0 France

31 minutes: French striker Marcus Thuram is on the ground after being checked by Austrian defender Kevin Danso.

There’s nothing wrong with that in my opinion – Danso stood his ground – and the referee agrees.

The game is a bit stagnant in the last ten minutes.

Austria 0-0 France

27 minutes: Slightly better from Austria in the last five minutes, which is just a few glimpses of their attacking talent.

However, getting through this imposing French defense and midfield can be difficult!

Austria 0-0 France

22 minutes: Austrian playmaker Florian Grillitsch is currently absent, with the physio on the pitch attending to him.

I think it was a challenge with Mbappe that caused a dead end. He’s fine with continuing, it seems…

Austria 0-0 France

19 minutes: Waste from Griezmann!

Rabiot bursts into midfield, but Griezmann goes solo in the box and his shot is blocked, while Dembele races outside him down the wing!

Austria 0-0 France

17 minutes: Austrian centre-back Maximilian Wober is the first name in the book for a tough challenge on Ousmane Dembele just outside the box!

There are no complaints!

Yet Griezmann was once again unable to take advantage, with his cross coming in comfortably for goalkeeper Pentz.

France on top, while Austria would like to be physical early!
